GOGFP Step #12. Verify your sites directly with Google. Others are optional.

Adding and Submitting a Sitemap

Even though Google claims the only page which is necessary to submit is the home page, the consensus among SEO experts is that submitting a sitemap can only benefit in SER. A sitemap will immediately alert search engines of every page on your site approved for them to crawl.

Some webhosts make it very easy to submit a sitemap. With places like Yola and Wordpress, if you complete the verification process with Google, then Submitting a Sitemap is a simple extra step and something they recommend. Google says; sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover. In its simplest terms, a XML Sitemap—usually called Sitemap, with a capital S—is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

This can be as easy as clicking on the Submit a Sitemap button and adding the suffix, /sitemap.xml to your Yola.com or Wordpress.com URL. Webs.com currently does not have the sitemap feature, but there's a simple program for it and things may change so check back. However, you can also verify each page individually if you want to be certain Google knows more than just your homepage. The HTML file is exactly the same for any page or any site that you create, so just load the HTML file onto a page and verify it with Google. Once you understand the process it takes very little time.

There are also programs that freely create sitemaps for you. XML-sitemaps is one I highly recommend - http://www.xml-sitemaps.com. Simply follow the prompts to enter the URL domain name, download the sitemap file it creates, then upload that file into the file manager area of your website. If that's done correctly, the next step is to go to Google Webmaster Tools, click on the site and follow the prompts to Submit a Sitemap. It usually takes a few hours to verify the sitemap which will show a green checkmark under the Status.
